Oil Analysis... every time

We encounter a surprising number of aircraft owners who are not familiar with the specifics of routine oil analysis. Most are aware that such a service exists, but never had it done for their aircraft. Others have said they thought it should be done only if their mechanic finds something “unusual”.

In fact, an oil analysis should be done at every oil change. It’s not expensive nor is it difficult to perform. Most sample kits run between $20-$30 and include a prepaid mailer to send in the sample to the lab. The true value of the oil analysis is not in any one report but in the ability to see trends over time. The more samples that are tested, the more data, the more accurate the trend.
What can you expect to see on an oil analysis? Formatting differs by lab but all reports contain chemical analysis and expert observations based on the results. Most importantly, subsequent analysis will identify whether the presence of certain metals is changing. The presence of these metals and their changing concentrations will lead to reasonable conclusions about the overall health of your engine. For example, an increased presence of iron might be an indicator of rust because of low utilization or an environmental factor.

The health of your piston engine can be better understood and managed proactively with routine oil analysis. If you would like learn more or start an oil analysis program for your aircraft, give us a call.
